Under general or minimal supervision performs set ups of moderate complexity and operate conventional, special purpose or numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic.
Interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers. Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting controls or control media as required. Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications. Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
Previous experience in machine shop processes of CNC or conventional applications. General tool sharpening abilities is required. Ability to apply concepts of basic math and trigonometry,read and interpret blueprint drawings. Experience with basic set up and control based programming. Perform first article inspections using precision measuring and gauging instruments on parts being machined or fabricated. General understanding of the entire machining/manufacturing process. Minimum HS diploma or GED certificate and minimum of 3+ years of technical experience in a manufacturing environment and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; Or educational equivalent of two year certificate from college or technical training school and 2+ years of technical experience in a manufacturing environment and/or training.
