Manager, Machine Shop

Responsible for effectively planning and directing activities of the machine shop supervising shop personnel engaged in machine operations to fabricate structural, metal products.  Delegates and assigns duties to achieve efficient and economical operation of shop area maintaining the overall productivity to ensure job completion and internal/external customer satisfaction.  Manage all aspects of the shop operations in an ISO 9001 production environment to meet the goals and objectives set by Management.   Oversees and assures the set up and operation of all standard machines as well as general experimental machinery, recommending design changes in equipment, material and/or procedures as needed. 


Prioritizes and maintains work schedules based on production deadlines and ensures deadlines are met. 

Interact with other departments to coordinate the shops work hours and personnel skills to support the company's manufacturing and scheduling needs.

Review the production/schedule needs to align manpower with tasks and schedule workload in shop.

Maintains reporting system that reflects schedules, performance and procedures. 

Evaluate workload and capacity to recommend sub-contracting.

Ensures that products produced comply with quality standards and customer requirements.

Makes budgetary recommendations for capital expenditures and manpower for machine shop area. 

Familiar with the performance capability of current machine shop equipment recommending replacement or needed maintenance in order to keep equipment in proper operating condition.

Interacts with engineering team and reviews blueprint drawings to suggest design improvements of parts determining correct machine hour standards and correct machine center selection.

Involves Manufacturing Engineering in resolving process or technical problems. 

Oversees the training of Machine Shop personnel, including the cross training in the use of various equipment as well as the use of new equipment prior to installation.

Evaluate/establish the order requirements for the consumable tooling and generate the requisitions for ordering.

Using historical data formulates and recommends annual Machine Shop operating budget which includes capital expenditures and manpower needs.   

Motivate, instruct and assist employees to achieve optimum and safe productivity and develop advanced skills. 

Maintain a high level of overall shop organization and housekeeping using 6S program.
Confers with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.

Directly supervises employees in the Machine Shop in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Demonstrated manufacturing management and technical leadership experience in large format job shop machining environment.   Work well in a collaborative environment.  Possess excellent verbal communication skills both verbal and written, to support effective correspondence with internal as well as external customers.  Significant hands-on experience in CNC/conventional machining.  In-depth understanding of the machining process.  Proficient in the use of MS Office software such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or two year Technical degree with a minimum of 10 years related manufacturing experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
